Welcome to Our World

We had the kids Christmas musical at church this morning. Jason hasn't been able to be part of it this year, but he said he enjoyed watching it just as well. The highlight of the morning was a song that gets me every time: Welcome to Our World, sung by Michael W Smith, written by Chris Rice.

I'll be honest, the impact of the song was mainly the memory of waiting for Jason to be born. We were preparing for the annual Christmas production down at Racine Assembly and Bekah Mokry was hanging out at the church quite a bit to rehearse the song. I had never even heard Michael W sing it, so it was Bekah's song all the way.

Meanwhile the day grew closer for Jason Elliott to be born. We ended up scheduling Colleen to be induced the day before our big dress rehearsal. We were to be in at 9 pm to start the potossin drip, but we got a call earlier in the evening saying the delivery area was too full to go ahead. We opted to come in at midnight.

I told Dr Park when dress rehearsal began, and that I no intention of leaving the hospital until I'd had a couple hours with my newborn son. A true professional, Dr Park got me to the church on time!

And little Jason was born, Dec 4, 2002 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. I wish I had been there when my stepkids were born because that feeling of being there in those very first moments is something you can never forget. Dr Park's first words were "There's nothing small about that baby!" How true! And I'll never forget Jason's quivering cry as the attendant's cared for him and cleaned him up.

The video and pictures are awesome, but nothing can replace the imprint on my heart from those first moments. And it all came back during the kids' Christmas program at the Northwoods Vineyard in Tomahawk this morning.

Jason, and Jesus, welcome to our world!

Welcome to Our World

Tears are falling, hearts are breaking
How we need to hear from God
You've been promised, we've been waiting

Welcome Holy Child
Welcome Holy Child

Hope that you don't mind our manger
How I wish we would have known
But long-awaited Holy Stranger
Make Yourself at home
Please make Yourself at home

Bring Your peace into our violence
Bid our hungry souls be filled
Word now breaking Heaven's silence

Welcome to our world
Welcome to our world

Fragile finger sent to heal us
Tender brow prepared for thorn
Tiny heart whose blood will save us
Unto us is born
Unto us is born

So wrap our injured flesh around You
Breathe our air and walk our sod
Rob our sin and make us holy

Perfect Son of God
Perfect Son of God
Welcome to our world
